The emerald eyes poked over the wall.
"This place smells." Emeryl whispered.
"Shh! Trolls have good ears!" Prism hushed him.
"Why'd you take us here?" Eric nudged Bentora.
"How was I suppose to know a village of trolls lived down here? I've never been past the caves." She snarled.
"Listen, we'll go around and find a way to climb to the top. Then we can continue from the other side of the canyon." Prism suggested.
"I can climb up that wall. Does anyone have a rope?" Bentora hissed.
"No, but I can make one." Prism pulled out his rag, cast a small cantrip and coiled it into a hemp rope.
"Good, here. I'll pass it down to you when I reach the top." Bentora strapped it over her shoulder.
Quietly they crept around the mud-packed walls. This city, like the last one, looked like a pile of shambles compared to the normal cities. Instead of hay, dried wood and sticks like the other town this one was packed with mud, manure and rocks. Large, hairy but lanky green frames strode around the city carrying various crude weapons and wearing little clothing. Of course, the smell was past foul, torturing more sensitive noses like Emeryl's and Bentora's.
On their journey around the canyon they'd accidentally bumped into the city border, but ducked behind the walls before anyone spotted them. Unlike the last city these ones had below average intelligence and hostile tendencies.
"Don't, attract, their, attention." Prism warned very slowly and quietly.
Reaching the other side of the city, Bentora started up the wall. At first one of the creatures almost caught a glimpse of her, but she scampered out of sight. The others leaned against the wall, waiting for the rope to fall down.
It hit Prism on the head and he started climbing up. After him Eric went, then Emeryl tested the rope nervously. He tied it around his waist, beginning the grueling climb up. From above they tugged him up inch by inch.
As they tugged it flung his side into a sharp rock and he let out a quick, high yelp. From a few feet above the wall he saw all their heads snap in his direction.
"They heard him!" Eric whispered urgently.
"Pull faster, pull faster!" Prism grabbed the very end and helped yank him along.
Hairy masses climbed over the wall and swiped at Emeryl as he hung in the air.
"Guys!" he yelled, pushing on rocks to keep right above the claws, "They're spitting on me!"
"We're on it!" Eric shouted back.
"Aaa!" Emeryl kicked his legs in the air to keep away from the trolls.
Hissing, one of them started to climb up the wall next to him until the spider leapt off Emeryl's head to the troll's face. As it bit at its eyes and nose the troll fell off, swiping at it and smacking other trolls.
"Spidey!" Emeryl held out his staff as he was pulled to the top. A thick strand of web flung out of the fray and attached to the staff. Seconds later the spider climbed up it, and several arms dragged Emeryl to the top of the cliff.
"Spidey!" he snuggled the spider.
"No time for that! I just learned trolls are very good climbers!" Prism pulled them away. Below the trolls dug their razor sharp claws into the walls, clamoring up after them.
"Don't forget anything, go go go!" Prism hurried them away from the cliffside.
"I don't know why they don't like me but I don't want to find out!" Emeryl darted away with the others.
It didn't take long for the ground to end in another cliff, with one cracked wooden bridge reaching to the other side.
Holding his breath, Prism ran halfway across before the others.
"It's good!" he waved them over. Eric, Bentora then Emeryl trotted after Prism. Towards the end the wood gave way and Emeryl dropped through.
"Hey!" he reached out to attempt to grab something. Two hands firmly clamped around his, holding him up. With frightened tears dripping out he opened his eyes to look at the pale boy with white hair.
"It's you!" Emeryl yelled as the boy pulled him out of the hole with incredible strength.
"Where'd he come from?" Eric asked as the other three watched. Emeryl made it the rest of the way across the bridge and twirled around to face the boy. He smiled, then swerved and ran to the other side.
"Wait! You can't go that way! There's trolls!" Emeryl screamed at him. At the other end he turned one hundred and eighty degrees, facing them and grinning softly. Without a word he knelt by the bridge and untied it from the nooks. It fell away, slamming against the wall on their side of the canyon. While they were safely away he was stranded on the other side with the trolls.
"No! Don't do that! There's trolls! Wait!" Emeryl yelled and Prism yanked him away.
"He knows something we don't. He'll be fine." Prism reassured him. Dragging along Emeryl, they continued through the cave and left the young albino alone.
